Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy or proliferation therapy, is a form of injection therapy used to control pain, restore function and treat muscle skeletal conditions. This therapy has been around in some form since the days of the Roman Empire. In fact the early medical practitioners would use needles to stick injured areas of the gladiators before they entered the arena.

Modern prolotherapy uses some of the same principles, but now with a better understanding of the mechanisms of why it works. This is based on modern studies of healing, healing substances naturally produced by the body and regeneration of tissues. Although not completely understood as all the bio chemical pathways have not been worked out completely we can provide you with a basic easy to understand review.

How prolotherapy works

Prolotherapy injections cause irritation and inflammation. This like receiving an injury causes a cascade of natural healing pathways to become activated. Such natural healing you will observe when you cut yourself. As you know the body heals that area. In prolotherapy, a micro injury is caused not really noticed by the patient, yet at the cellular level the body turns on the healing signals. Once those signals are activated they tell healing cells , fibroblast, stem cells etc to go to work in the area. If there is not much to heal , as in a micro injury then the body will naturally go through the process of cresting new tissue and the like. Studies have shown when repeated injections take place for example in or near a weak tendon, the body creates a stronger tendon. This is the basic principle we know of. There are other natural process which take place. One is modulation of inflammation at some point along which creates pain relief.

Conditions We Treat with Prolotherapy

Of course not all conditions respond to prolotherapy and neither do all of the patients who are treated with prolotherapy find absolute relief. Nevertheless, it has proven to be an effective treatment given the right patient and circumstances. Here is a list of the conditions we currently treat with prolotherapy.

Arthritis

The pain of arthritis can be helped with prolotherapy, as mentioned inflammation can be modulated thus pain relieved.

Back Pain

Back pain can be caused by weakened ligaments and strains , these ligametous structures can be strengthened by a series of prolotherapy sessions.

Degenerative Arthritis

Pain relief from prototherapy is one possible outcome for all degenerative arthritic diseases along with some stabilization of the effected joints.

Degenerative Disc Disease

When the disk between the spinus process shrinks , impingement and pain can result from the inflammation. Prolotherapie’s anti inflammatory effects help a great deal.

Fibromyalgia

In some forms of fibromyalgia loose weak ligaments and connective tissue is at its root cause. The strengthening of these tissues with therapy can improve and may help with the chronic pain of fibromyalgia.

Hip Degeneration

As a very complex joint the hip has tendons , ligaments and other structures which can be weak, degenerate and fail. Prolotherapy can add strength to these structures, help some of the pain and inflammation.

Knee Injuries

Like the Hip Joint the knee is a larger complex joint that endures a bit of wear and tear over the years. The meniscus, the patellar tendons and the ligaments become weak and stretched. This benefits of prolotherapy is well documented and discussed at the

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is an extremely common conditions for all people. This can have many causes and there are multiple treatments depeding on the cause. Sorting out each treatment can be difficult, sometimes a trial of prolotherapy may be the answer.

Rotator Cuff Tears

The rotator cuff presents a special problem in that surgery many times is recommended to tighten and repair this injury. It does work but many times scars remain , risk of surgery and downtime are problems. Injection therapy using prolo may prevent the need for surgery.

Whiplash

Whiplash can definitely lead to stretched ligaments and soft tissue structural components. Since the therapy tightens structures this may be one very good way to alleviate discomfort from whiplash injuries.

We have multiple specialists and clinical options at Infinity Life Center such as hand surgeons, sports medicine doctors as well as naturopathic care. That way we can tailor your treatment the way we feel is best outside the limits of a single practitioner practice.
